Ivoclar, the manufacturer of eMax materials, has developed a process where eMax porcelain, milled from the CEREC MCXL milling chamber can be fused to a Zircnia framework. Zirconia is used as the substructure, providing great strength, in all-porcelain fixed bridges. Traditionally, porcelain is hand layered on to the Zirconia. The porcelain strength is approximately 150-160 mPA. The eMax CAD-on technique not only provides the precision of the CAD-CAM milling technique, but provides a strength of 360 mPA. This technique also has the potential to decrease the time it takes to fabricate and deliver the final fixed bridge to the patient. The idea is relatively simple. There are some 10 specific bacteria that are responsible for causing cavities and periodontal disease. If you can eliminate the "bad" bacteria, then you can prevent cavities and periodontal disease. But how do you eliminate the "bad" bacteria? If you can flood the area with "good" bacteria, they will overtake the "bad" bacteria. This is the similar to the probiotics (pro = good; biotics = bacteria) that many people take to populate intestinal flora. Before you run out to the local health food store and try chewing probiotic tablets, the mouth requires very specific bacteria to accomplish this task. ProBiora3 is reported to have the right bacteria in the right combinations.

The first step is to get a good cleaning. Depending upon your current periodontal condition, a simple prophylaxis or deep cleaning may be required. This is then followed by taking the ProBiora3's EvoraPro mint flavored dissolvable tablets every evening for the next ten days. After that, to maintain healthy flora, EvoraPlus should be used daily. For more information, click on any of the ProBiora3 links or ask us at your next cleaning.

Sedation Update

<dc:subject>Dental Blog</dc:subject>

Fear of dental treatment is common, even though most procedures can be painless. Bicon dental implants provide an alternative to bone grafting in minimal bone height situations.

The addition of a new implant line to a dental practice requires a significant investment in equipment and time. Implant dentistry has its roots tracing back to 1951 when the American Academy of Implant Dentistry was organized. During 1986, after decades of development and research, dental implants were no longer considered an experimental procedure. Dental implants became a recommended and routine treatment modality. The AAID developed a very rigorous training protocol and testing requirement in order to obtain fellowship within the organization. The AAID also sponsored the American Board of Oral Implantology / Implant Dentistry (ABOI) for the purpose of testing candidates for diplomate status to obtain their board certification. The testing process is extensive, requiring minimum course hours and content, case documentation, written examination and oral examination. Dr. Brown obtained his diplomate status with the ABOI in 1993 and fellowship in the AAID in 1994.

The AAID made application to the American Dental Association to be recognized as a dental specialty. After a few years of stalling, the ADA rejected the AAID's application to make implant dentistry a specialty. Politics again reared its ugly head and under pressure from the ADA and constituent organizations, many state dental boards and legislatures prohibited dentists from advertising their advanced training in implant dentistry. The public was prohibited from knowing who in their community actually had advanced training and testing in the field of dental implantology. The AAID filed suit against the states of Florida and California for First Amendment and civil rights violations. The suit in Florida was brought in Florida courts while the suit in California was brought in federal court. Both courts were in total agreement with each other. The AAID and the ABOI were determined to be bona fide credentialing organizations. Thanks to these court decisions, dentists who undergo the rigorous examination process and pass, can now provide this information to the public. The public now can effectively evaluate practitioners offering dental implants on the basis of their training and successful completion of the rigorous examination process from a bona fide credentialing organization. For more information about these requirements, see the AAID's webpage at: http://www.aaid-implant.org and the ABOI's webpage at: http://www.aboi.org/.

Dr. Brown holds the highest level of certification in dental implantology. Water coolant is necessary during tooth preparation in order to avoid overheating of the tooth. Typically, the water used in this process is regular tap water. The purity of tap water varies across the country and within communities. Contamination in waterlines can involve the various chemicals put into community water sources as well as bacteria and viruses that may develop in the lines themselves. The country's water supply is generally considered to be safe. I am unaware of any health problems that have been attributable to waterline contamination. But in an effort to be pro-active, I have eliminated the use of community water supply as a coolant in operative dental procedures. Our new Adec delivery units utilize a water coolant completely separate from the community water supply. We use sterile distilled water in these new delivery units so that every operative procedure uses water coolant that is free from all contaminants. This scanner is a 3-D imaging device that provides exceptional quality and unprecedented diagnostic capabilities. The Galileos has an extremely low radiation exposure of 70 millisevers. Exceptional diagnostic 3-D images at very low radiation doses results in optimum safety and diagnostic ability for the patient. Dr. Brown has added this technology to his practice. The Galileos can interface with the Cerec 3-D for virtual implant placement. We can now take an optical image of the patient with the Cerec 3-D and design a final restoration.
